Biochemistry Affiliate Professor Silvia Cavagnero to Receive 2025 Emily M. Gray Award

Cavagnero_Silvia_IPiBCongratulations to Silvia Cavagnero, affiliate faculty in the Department of Biochemistry, on being named the recipient of the Biophysical Society’s 2025 Emily M. Gray Award! The biennial award is given for significant contributions to education in biophysics.

Cavagnero is being honored for developing courses, innovating instructional methods, mentoring students at all levels, and promoting diversity in biophysics.

“Silvia is an accomplished biophysicist and a born educator,” said Biophysical Society President Gabriela Popescu. “Throughout her career, Silvia has incorporated the education and mentorship of graduate and undergraduate researchers into her daily work and research goals. Her focus on mentoring trainees at all levels and especially those from underrepresented groups exemplifies the standards set by Emily Gray. We are honored to recognize Silvia’s work thus far, which forecasts continued success efforts in the future.”

At UW–Madison, Cavagnero is associate director of the Biophysics graduate program and is a professor in the Department of Chemistry. Her research examines how proteins achieve their three-dimensional shapes in the presence of ribosome and molecular chaperones.
