All members of the Integrated Program in Biochemistry (IPiB) community are invited to register for the 2016 IPiB Retreat. The retreat will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9 at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery building. Registration for the event closes at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25.

“The IPiB retreat is an opportunity for current students and incoming students to come together to connect with each other and their professors personally but also learn about their research,” says Brian Carrick, an officer on the Student Faculty Liaison Committee responsible for planning the retreat. “Anyone involved with the IPiB program can attend, including office staff and members of our excellent facilities like NMRFAM.”

The event will feature 12, formal 20-minute talks from faculty speakers, graduate students, and a post-doc, as well as two one-hour poster sessions and free meals for those who register accordingly. Carrick says he is excited for the speaker lineup because it represents not only diverse research topics but also faculty at different stages of their careers.

The retreat is one of the first glimpses that first year graduate students get at the exciting research taking place in the department. Because IPiB students rotate in different labs at the beginning of the program, this time is critical for them to see posters and hear talks to explore their many options.

“We will be focusing a lot on the science taking place in our department,” Carrick says. “We are excited to see new opportunities for collaboration arise from the retreat.”
