Biochemistry Travel Awards
Deadline to Apply
A Travel Award Application must be submitted via hard copy or email to Megan Pierce (mcummings4@wisc.edu) in the Biochemistry Business Office. Applications must be received at least one week prior to the trip, but preferably with as much lead time as possible.
Applications for a Biochemistry Travel Award Must Include
- Applicant name and e-mail address
- Applicant status (grad student, postdoc)
- Nature of meeting, location, date(s)
- Breakdown of expected expenses (travel, lodging, registration, meals, etc.)
- Details of other support available or applied for (training grant, conference support, etc.)
- Copy of poster or talk abstract (with authors shown)
- Signature or email approval of major professor certifying the information and authorizing the application
No application will be considered without full information and P.I. signature/email approval.
Eligibility
People eligible to apply are IPiB graduate students assigned to a Biochemistry Department faculty member's lab, and postdocs in any Biochemistry Department faculty member's lab. Students in other programs, departments, staff and scientists are not eligible.
The applicant must be giving an oral presentation or be first author on a poster being displayed. A copy of the poster or talk abstract (with authors shown) must accompany the application.
Only one award will be given to any individual per academic year (September 1 thru August 31). The maximum annual award is $500 for domestic (includes Canada and Mexico) and $700 for international travel.
People with a travel allowance on their fellowships or grants should use money from this source first; Biochemistry may then supplement such awards up to the $500 or $700 limit.
Students on training grants should request travel funds first from the grant; Biochemistry may then supplement such awards up to the $500 or $700 limit.
A postdoctoral fellow who has a travel allowance is not eligible.
Additional Funding
Additional funding is available from the Graduate School through their Student Research Grants Competition (formerly Vilas Travel Awards). The SRGC program has two award categories - Conference Presentation Funds and Research Travel Awards - each with multiple award amount levels. To encourage people to apply for these awards, Biochemistry travel awards will not be affected by receipt of a SRGC Award, as long as the total expense of the trip is not exceeded. The same policy applies to awards from national organizations or meeting organizers. That is, an award that is not automatic and must be applied for will not decrease the Biochemistry Travel Award, as long as the total expense of the trip is not exceeded.
