How do I remotely connect my computer to the Biochemistry Network?

Use the UW Departmental VPN with the instructions available below. The Biochemistry UW Departmental VPN should still allow using devices on your local network while connected.


Mac OS

There are two ways to connect from macOS computers.

    Option 1: GlobalConnect VPN Client

    Installation:

    1. Visit the VPN website - https://biochem.vpn.wisc.edu
    2. Sign in with your NetID and NetID password
    3. Download the correct client for your computer
    4. Install the downloaded software

    To connect to the VPN:

    1. Open the GlobalConnect software (it will typically be in your menu bar as well)
    2. If you have not connected before, you will need to enter "biochem.vpn.wisc.edu" into the portal address
    3. Click Connect
    4. Enter your NetID and NetID password when prompted
    5. Disconnect when you are finished

    Option 2: Built In VPN Client

    Installation (this is already done on departmental computers) - Download and install the installation profile

    To connect to the VPN:

    1. Open System Preferences
    2. Click Network
    3. Select "UW-Biochem VPN"
    4. Optional - Check the "Show VPN status in menu bar" option to put a shortcut in your menu bar for future use
    5. Click Connect
    6. You'll be prompted for your NetID and NetID password
    7. Disconnect from the VPN when you are done

    Removal/Uninstall (you can't remove this on a departmental machine)

    1. Open System Preferences
    2. Click Profiles
    3. Select "Settings for UW-Biochem VPN"
    4. Click the "-" option to remove the profile

    Windows

    Installation:

    1. Visit the VPN website - https://biochem.vpn.wisc.edu

        Option 1: GlobalConnect VPN Client

        Installation:

        1. Download the VPN client from the UW website - https://www.net.wisc.edu/vpn/clients/
        2. Follow the installation instructions located at https://www.paloaltonetworks.com/documentation/41/globalprotect/globalpr...

        To connect to the VPN:

        1. Use the following globalprotect command to connect to the VPN:
          globalprotect connect --portal biochem.vpn.wisc.edu
        2. Enter your NetID and NetID password when prompted
        3. You can view the status of your connection with the following command:
          globalprotect show --status
        4. You can view details about your connection with the following command:
          globalprotect show --details
        5. Disconnect when you are finished with the following command:
          globalprotect disconnect

        Option 2: Alternative VPN Clients

        You can connect to the VPN with any standard IPSec client. The instructions below are for VPNC (a free, third-party client).  You can adapt the instructions as need to the client of your choice.

        Installation:

        1. Use the appropriate command for your version of Linux to install VPNC on your computer. Examples below:
          sudo yum install vpnc
          sudo apt-get install vpnc
        2. Create a configuration file /etc/vpnc/uwbiochem.conf
          sudo touch /etc/vpnc/uwbiochem.conf
        3. Use your preferred text editor to populate the configuration file with the following information (you must run the text editor with root privileges i.e. sudo)
          IPSec gateway biochem.vpn.wisc.edu
          IPSec ID BIOCHEM
          IPSec secret UWBiochemVPN1883
          ​​​​​​​Xauth username Your NetID​​​​​​​

        To connect to the VPN:

        1. Use the following VPNC command to connect to the VPN:
          sudo vpnc uwbiochem.conf
        2. You'll be prompted for your NetID password
        3. Disconnect when you are finished with the following command:
          sudo killall vpnc

        iOS Devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch)

        There are two ways to connect from macOS computers.

        Option 1: GlobalConnect VPN Client

        1. Download GlobalProtect from the App Store - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/globalprotect/id592489989?mt=8
        2. Open GlobalProtect
        3. Set the portal to "biochem.vpn.wisc.edu" & click Connect
        4. Enter your NetID and NetID password
        5. Disconnect when you are finished (under Home in GlobalProtect)

        Option 2: Built In VPN Client

        Installation (this is already done on departmental computers) - Download and install the installation profile - You will be prompted for your NetID and NetID Password as part of the install.

        To connect to the VPN:

        1. Open Settings
        2. Click VPN
        3. Make sure "UW-Biochem VPN" is selected
        4. Change the Status switch to connect
        5. Disconnect from the VPN when you are done

        Removal/Uninstall (you can't remove this on a departmental machine)

        1. Open Preferences
        2. Click General
        3. Click Profiles
        4. Select "Settings for UW-Biochem VPN"
        5. Click Remove Profile and follow the prompts

        Android Devices

        Since the Palo Alto Android client has issues with different versions of Android OS. Biochem IT recommends using the built in Android VPN client at this time.

        1. Go to Settings - Network & Internet - VPN

        1a: Samsung devices: Settings - Connections - More Connection Settings - VPN

        1. Tap to add a new VPN session and fill in the following information:
          • Name: BiochemVPN
          • Type: IPSec Xauth PSK
          • Server Address: biochem.vpn.wisc.edu
          • IPSec Identifier: BIOCHEM
          • IPSec pre-shared key: UWBiochemVPN1883
          • Username: Your NetID
          • Password: Your NetID Password
        2. Click Save
        3. You can access this from the VPN panel in your settings to connect or disconnect.
