Spill Information

Emergencies

For volatile or flammable chemicals, evacuate the room and Call 911!

Non-emergency spills

Do not attempt to contain or clean up any chemical spill unless you know what the spilled material is, its hazards and you have been trained in safe cleanup methods.

Minor Spills - (Inside building, not escaping to drain and not an inhalation hazard)

Anyone who knows what has spilled; its hazards and safe cleanup methods may clean up a minor spill.  If you do not know how to clean it up, contact someone who does.

Minor spills do not necessarily need the assistance of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S). Laboratory and facility workers who have had the proper training and possess the appropriate equipment can safely and effectively handle the majority of biological, chemical, oil and other types of spills that occur in laboratories, dormitories, maintenance facilities and other university buildings. However, many spills must still be reported, such as any release of a substance to the environment. Contact EH&S for details regarding proper incident and spill reporting.

For more detailed information on Biological, Chemical, Oil & Other Environmental Releases, please see the EH&S Spill Information page. Please familiarize yourself with the Lab Safety Guide - Chapter 5, Emergencies & Spill Response [PDF] and all of the safety procedures and protocols for your lab.

Major Spills - (Outside the building or that you cannot safely clean up)

If the chemicals are not volatile or flammable, notify EH&S - 265-5000 - Please specify the type of spill so your call can be directed appropriately.

Employees are reminded of their obligation to complete the Employee’s Work Injury and Illness Report, available from your supervisor or electronically at: http://www.bussvc.wisc.edu/ecbs/emp-wkc-menu.html.
