Safety Training
Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) offers a variety of safety related training opportunities, some of which may be required depending on your lab, chemicals, materials and radiation use. Please see the EH&S Training Overview page for an overview of all training offered or the links below for more detailed training information.
Lab personnel are required to get Core Biosafety Training before beginning research. Please return confirmation of training to the Biochemistry office within 30 days of your start date!

Animal Safety Training
Work in Animal Research requires a three step certification process (Policy #1999-006) and re-certification of current animal users is required every five years. Please visit the EH&S Animal Safety Training page for more detailed information.
Biosafety Training
Mandatory Biosafety Training is required for all personnel working in labs with biohazard materials. All new personnel must complete this training before working in research that needs Institutional Biosafety Committee review. OSHA also requires annual Blood Borne Pathogens training for personnel at risk of occupational exposure to human blood or Other Potential Infectious Materials (OPIMs).
All personnel are strongly encouraged to complete not only the EH&S Required Training but also consider completing any relevant Optional Training.
Chemical Safety Training
Chemical Safety Courses such as Chemical Safety Training, Fume Hood Use, Hazardous Chemical Shipping/Transportation and Hazard Communication are offered at the EH&S Chemical Safety Training page.
Fire Safety Training
While various national, state and local ordinances require portable fire extinguishers to be placed in accessible areas of all occupied commercial buildings, the actual use of one is foreign to most people. The most common item stressed to all individuals is to leave a building upon hearing and seeing the fire alarm. While this is important, fire extinguishers can be used on incipient stage fires if the user has been trained.
Please visit the EH&S Fire Safety Training page for information about Fire Extinguisher Training and Fire Extinguisher Refresher Training.
General & Building Safety Training
The General & Building Safety Training program offers Learn@UW online and onsite courses in general health and safety topics. Role, function, and workplace-specific content is also available through division and academic unit courses.
For more information on the various training options please visit the EH&S General & Building Safety Training page.
Radiation Safety Training
The Office of Radiation Safety offers several courses available for self-registration through Learn@UW. The EH&S Radiation Safety Training page lists courses related to radiation safety, x-ray diffraction and laser safety.
