Smoke-free Policy
UW-Madison adopted a smoke-free policy effective since April 8, 1991. Based on input from the campus community and experience with the original policy, the smoke-free policy was reviewed and amended in 1995 and in 2008. All buildings and vehicles, regardless of location, which are owned or leased by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, are entirely smoke-free. Except as noted below, the smoke-free policy applies to all indoor air space including individual faculty and administrative offices.
Smoking is not permitted near exits and entrances of UW buildings, except at a reasonable distance (25 feet or more) or unless otherwise designated. All indoor air space of university-owned and leased athletic facilities, University Residence Halls, and University Hospital and Clinics are smoke-free. Memorial Union and Union South are smoke-free with the exception of designated hotel rooms.
More information about the smoke-free policy is available at the UW-Madison Smoke-free Policy knowledge base article.
To be in compliance with the UW Madison policy, we cannot allow smoking at building entrances. We have posted signage to help remind everyone where smoking has been prohibited. However, we have created a designated smoking area outside of our loading dock and outside of the east entrance. These areas are at least 25 feet from the nearest entrance.
If you are a smoker, please smoke in the designated areas.
