Chemical Methods for Protein Modification and Cellular Delivery
Kalie Mix of the Raines Lab is working to develop a method to deliver proteins into cells. By modifying the surface of proteins with a chemical reaction, she is able to “trick” the plasma membrane into letting the proteins pass into the cell instead of being repelled. This ability to deliver proteins into the cell can help researchers learn more about intracellular interactions and inhibit or augment them.
She says the work is interesting to her because it’s a technology that can be used as a tool for basic science but also has the potential to translate into the clinic. She will continue to focus on this work and then pursue a postdoc after IPiB.
